A Word About Stem Cells…

Over the years, Dr. Sliwin has taken a great interest in stem cells and stem cell research, in addition to his work as a top-rated plastic surgeon in Toronto. Specifically, how stem cells can help heal and correct post-traumatic deformities like fat loss resulting from trauma or depressed scars, regenerate cartilage loss from arthritis and treatment of autoimmune diseases.
Stem cells are cells produced by the body that have the ability to transform or morph into almost any other type of cell. Most people have probably heard of embryonic stem cell research and the controversy that surrounds it, but not many know that regular body fat is also a source of stem cells. In fact, there are up to 1000 times more stem cells per gram of tissue in fat than in bone marrow, which is the other primary source of adult stem cells.
Dr. Sliwin is a member of the International Society for Stem Cell Research, The Cell Society, International Federation for Adipose Therapeutics and Science and through his research has learned how the stem cells in body fat injections can promote the growth of new blood vessels, increase blood flow and repair soft tissue damage in post-traumatic wounds. This specialty still has a lot of distance to cover before it is perfected, but with Dr. Sliwin’s interest in the subject matter it will get there before long, so stay tuned!
